The urban part of Hamilton is the most relevant to student life and can be broken into three major regions:
1. Closest to McMaster
- Westdale (East of McMaster): Cafes, shops, and a safe residential area.
- Ainslie Wood (South): Popular with students for its rental housing.
- University Gardens (West): Formerly called University Plaza, with retail and groceries.
Here is ideal for students due to its proximity to campus and good public transport.
2. Downtown Hamilton
- Main neighborhoods: Kirkendall North, Beasley, Landsdale – Vibrant, central, and safer downtown options.
- Avoid areas east of Wellington St. due to lower safety and limited access.
3. The Mountain
- Features the Lime Ridge Mall, Walmart, and many buffet restaurants.
- Not recommended for students due to poor bus access to McMaster and steep travel routes.

- Main Street: Connects McMaster to Downtown; one-way eastbound downtown.
- King Street: Downtown’s one-way westbound street parallel to Main.
- Public Transit (HSR): Key bus routes are 1, 5 (5A, 5C, etc.), and 10.
- Mountain Routes: Roads like Upper James St. and Upper Wentworth St. indicate Mountain areas.
