Hi everyone! If you're new to Canada or just starting your studies, you’ve probably heard of UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan). It’s a vital medical insurance plan for international students studying in Ontario. In this post, I’ll explain what it is, how it works, how to access your card, make a claim, and use it at McMaster University. Let’s get started! 🩺
âť“ What is UHIP?
UHIP is a health insurance plan provided to international students who are not eligible for OHIP (Ontario’s provincial health insurance for residents). The cost is included in your tuition and it’s administered by Sun Life Financial.
Good news: If you are a full-time student at McMaster, you are automatically enrolled in UHIP. No need to apply separately.
đź“… Coverage Period
- UHIP coverage runs from September 1 to August 31 of the following year
- New students should make sure UHIP is active before arriving in Canada
- If you arrive early, contact McMaster to request an earlier start date

Steps to submit a UHIP claim:
- Go to https://uhip.ca/Claim/Index
- Download and fill out the claim form
- Collect invoices, receipts, and medical documentation
- Upload your documents to Sun Life’s website or mail them
- You’ll be reimbursed by direct deposit or cheque
💡 Always keep your payment and medical records for proof. Once approved, you’ll get your money back.
